Do companies really need fewer visionaries and more mechanics? By Bernadette Petitpas
I have read in a few articles and posts that in these uncertain times, organizations need fewer visionaries and more mechanics. The rationale is supported by examples of overreaching with dire consequences.
Of course, decisions and actions need to consider the financial circumstances of any given company or not-for-profit. Not only do decisions need to be good, that is, supporting the organization’s sustainability and the achievement of its long-term objectives, but they need to be made at the right time, otherwise they run the risk, well, of not being such good decisions…
And in what direction does a decision propel the organization? I would suggest that the end result and motivation should be clear, or you might end up with an itinerary that resembles cooked pasta in a bowl… difficult to follow until you painstakingly separate the strands. So, what will help to clarify where the organization is heading and why? What will give a meaning to everyone’s efforts? Generally, a vision spelled out in a strategic plan.
Now you will say that unless you have mechanics, the machine may not run smoothly, or actually not at all, and you would be right. But would you like the vessel onboard which are employees and investors and clients to steadfastly and swiftly run into an iceberg? I don’t think so. And would your mechanics be able to suggest improvements or anticipate problems if they don’t know where the vessel is going? Highly doubtful, and not for a lack of their skills.
So, vision and strategy are step one: Where are we going, when, how and with whom?
Who the organization will take its journey with encompasses more than merely employees, clients or passengers and investors. And once all those aboard are identified… you have to figure out how to work well together!
As to how the organization will be working and knowing how many and what type of mechanics it requires, and how to best use their individual skill sets, a little creativity would come in handy in these uncertain times so that your plans can be achieved.
